Samsung DA29-00020B vs HAF-CIN/EXP: Which One Do I Need?

Last checked 2026-10-24 NSF database check: pending 7 sources

Quick answer

They're the same filter. Samsung sells it as HAF-CIN/EXP, and its spec sheet lists DA29-00020B as the replacement cartridge code for system DA97-08006A-B. [S1] [S2] If your old filter says either one, buy either one.

  • Rated for 300 gallons. Samsung says to replace it every six months. [S1] [S3]
  • Samsung's HAF-CIN spec sheet claims NSF 42 and NSF 53 (cysts, turbidity, lead, asbestos, benzene, carbofuran, p-dichlorobenzene, mercury). [S1] Samsung's support site says its filters also meet NSF/ANSI 401. [S3] We haven't confirmed either in NSF's database yet.
  • Not the same as HAF-QIN or HAF-CU1. Samsung says its fridges use one of three filters, so read the model number on your old filter before you buy. [S3]
  • It's an internal filter that turns 90° to lock. [S1] [S2]

Certified alternatives

Generic DA29-00020B replacements cost less, but Samsung warns against them, and the claims on their listings vary. Here's what we found.

Where the HAF-CIN goes and how to change it

HAF-CIN is an internal filter: it sits inside the fridge compartment and locks with a 90° turn. [S1] Where exactly depends on your model, so check your user manual if you can't find it. [S3] Samsung's steps, in short:

  1. Turn off the water supply.
  2. Open the filter cover and turn the old filter counterclockwise to unlock it, then remove it.
  3. Take the protection cap off the new filter, insert it, and turn it clockwise until it locks. Line up the lock symbol with the indicator line. [S3]
  4. Reset the filter light. On most models, press and hold Filter Reset for three seconds. Family Hub models reset it under Fridge Manager. [S3]

PartSelect says to flush about 3 gallons through a new filter before you use the dispenser. [S5]

Why "DA29-00020B vs HAF-CIN" isn't really a choice

Samsung's spec sheet gives one filter three kinds of numbers: the model name (HAF-CIN/EXP), the replacement cartridge code (DA29-00020B) and the system number (DA97-08006A-B). [S1] [S2] Listings mix them up, which makes them look like different products. They aren't.

The mix-up that matters is HAF-CIN vs HAF-QIN vs HAFCU1. Samsung says its fridges take one of those three, and the way to tell is the model number on your old filter. [S3]

If the new filter won't seat

Samsung says to turn off the water and dispense until it stops, to relieve the pressure. If the new filter still won't go in, Samsung says either the new or the old filter isn't a Samsung filter. An old filter can open the lock only far enough to get itself out. [S4] Samsung's fix is to put the old filter back in, press it into the housing, and turn it left as far as it will go, then remove it and install the new one. [S4]

FAQ

Is DA29-00020B the same as HAF-CIN/EXP?

Yes. Samsung's HAF-CIN/EXP spec sheet lists DA29-00020B as the replacement cartridge code. [S1] [S2]

Is HAF-CIN the same as HAF-QIN?

No. Samsung lists HAF-CIN, HAF-QIN and HAFCU1 as three different filter models and says to check the model number on your existing filter. [S3]

How often should I change a Samsung HAF-CIN filter?

Samsung recommends every six months, and the filter light runs on a six-month timer. [S3] The filter is rated for 300 gallons. [S1]

Can I run my Samsung fridge without the HAF-CIN filter?

PartSelect's description of the genuine DA29-00020B says no bypass plug is needed: remove the filter and water bypasses it. [S6] Samsung's pages we read don't address this, so check your owner's manual.

My new HAF-CIN filter won't go in. What do I do?

Samsung says to relieve the water pressure first (turn off the supply and dispense until water stops). If it still won't seat, Samsung says either the new or the old filter isn't a Samsung filter. [S4] Its "fully unlock the housing" trick uses the old filter to turn the lock all the way open. [S4]

Are cheaper DA29-00020B replacements NSF certified?

Some claim to be. The Waterdrop one we checked claims NSF/ANSI 42, 53 and 372. [S7] Samsung warns that third-party filters may cause leaks. [S3] [S4]

What we could not verify

  • NSF database confirmation for HAF-CIN/EXP, DA29-00020B or any alternative (info.nsf.org didn't respond to our checker on 2026-10-24). We'll update this page when we can confirm them.
  • Whether the HAF-CIN/EXP itself carries NSF/ANSI 401. Samsung's HAF-CIN spec sheet lists only NSF 42 and 53. [S1] The 401 claim comes from Samsung's general support page about all its filters. [S3]
  • DA29-00020A, 04609101000 and Kenmore 46-9101 as equivalents. Only an aftermarket seller lists them. [S7] We didn't find them on a Samsung page.
  • A complete US model list. Samsung's model list comes from its Canadian site. [S1] We didn't find an equivalent list on Samsung US.
  • Samsung's spec sheet gives the size as "5.4 x 5.4 x 22.5 mm". [S1] That looks like a typo for centimeters. PartSelect lists 2.13 x 2.13 x 8.86 inches. [S6]
